The concept of Kala is one of the fundamental principles in Ayurveda, representing various layers or membranes within the human body that perform specific functions. Ashaya (an organ) and Kala (a limiting membrane between Dhatu (tissue)) are associated with fibrous, serous, and mucous membranes. Among the seven Kala described in classical Ayurvedic texts, Pittadhara Kala plays a crucial role in digestive and metabolic activities. It is primarily associated with the Grahani, identified in modern anatomy as the small intestine. When Grahani is impaired, nutrient absorption is hindered, leading to malabsorption syndrome. Any anatomical or physiological issues with Grahani (Pittadhara Kala) should be addressed seriously. Understanding Grahani and Pittadhara Kala in detail is essential for a comprehensive understanding. This review aims to explore the anatomical structure of Pittadhara Kala in relation to Grahani, correlating Ayurvedic concepts with modern anatomical and physiological understanding of the small intestine and further structural changes occurs in pathological condition as malabsorption.
