Abstract: The main aim of this article is to explain the design of a Smart Cane that assists the blind people. The cane is integrated with ultrasonic sensor, motion detector, GPS, GSM along with light and water sensing. This system uses ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles, LDR to identify the approaching vehicles. Moisture sensor is used for detecting the dampness of the floor or road. The system uses 8 channel voice module (APR33A3) to give different voice alerts. A PIR sensor is connected for motion sensing. Wireless RF remote is used to activate the buzzer attached to the walker to identify the location whenever the walker is not with him. A button is provided which when pressed will give the location of the blind person to his family members. This is done with the help of GPS and GSM modules. In addition the person can communicate through voice calls with his/her relatives whenever required. The ultrasonic sensor not only identifies the obstacle but also gives the distance at which the obstacle is present. All the sensors are integrated with the microcontroller which processes the signals received (with the help of embedded programs) and gives appropriate alerts through buzzer and voice messages to the visually impaired which help him in taking suitable decisions and safety measures. Apart from this a feature is added which helps him to be contacted by his family members or others to know his/her whereabouts and safety.
