Abstract: Background: The current global statistics for the year 2022 indicate that there were almost 20million new cases of cancer and close to 10million cancer deaths. With almost 2.5million new cases and over 1.8million deaths worldwide lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality in 2022 ,responsible for close to one in eight(12.4%)cancers diagnosed globally and one in five (18.7%)cancer deaths. The disease ranks first among men and second among women for both incidence and mortality, with male‐to‐female lung cancer incidence and mortality ratios of around.1 Compared to the western population, the prevalence of lung cancer in India appears to be increasing.2 • AIM: To study clinicopathological profile and pre-treatment staging of lung cancer. • OBJECTIVES: The specific objectives of the studies were as follows: • To evaluate clinical profile of patients who were diagnosed with lung cancer. • To study the histology of lung cancer. • To stage the lung cancer at the time of presentation. Methodology: This present study was carried out at the Respiratory Medicine Department of Rohilkhand Medical College and Hospital in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Chief complaints were noted and detailed history along with clinical examination was done. 1.USG/ CT-Guided fine-needle aspiration (FNAC) or biopsy from site of lesion as per feasibility Fiber optic Bronchoscopy and BAL (Bronchoalveolar lavage) or biopsy, pleural fluid analysis, peripheral lymph node biopsy, thoracoscopy guided biopsy or biopsy from any other site for definitive diagnosis. 2. Fine needle aspiration cytology /histopathology of relavent sample was done 3. Pathological molecular cytology characteristics of the tumor was analysed as and when required Results: In our study, the investigation modalities used diagnose lung cancer were precisely depending on the site of lesion. Ultrasound guided transthoracic procedures gave diagnosis in 52% of cases whereas fibreoptic bronchoscopy assisted procedures in 48% patients.. When correlating the diagnostic modalities used with site of lesion, significant positive correlation exists between them (significant >0.05, p value: 0.000). In the present study, two third of patients had advanced disease (stage IIIB-IV) at the time of presentation. Nearly 50% of them were with poor performance status. This was due to wrong conception about symptoms, neglecting early symptoms, occasionally psychological reasons such as denial of illness are some of the cause for delay in seeking medical help for the confirmation and treatment of cancer. This emphasizes the need to create awareness among general population about lung cancer. Nearly 50% of the advanced disease patients have poor performance status. This was mainly due to disease severity and partly due to level of tobacco exposure. The performance status was directly correlated to smoking index in our study.
