Abstract: The progressive loss of myelin in the central nervous system, which causes neurological impairments, is the hallmark of multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic autoimmune illness. The complex ecology of bacteria that live in the digestive tract, known as the gut microbiome, may have an impact on multiple sclerosis, according to recent research. The synthesis of metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and modification of gut permeability are two ways in which the gut microbiome interacts with the immune system. These interactions can affect autoimmune reactions and systemic inflammation. The idea behind microbiome-targeted therapy is to change MS symptoms and the course of the illness by modifying the gut microbiota. Treatments such as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), probiotics, and prebiotics are being investigated. This field has several challenges, such as the necessity for thorough safety and long-term efficacy trials and the significant variation in individual microbiomes, which makes it difficult to produce treatments that are successful everywhere. The combination of microbiome-based therapeutics with current MS treatments and individualized approaches to these therapies should be the main areas of future study. Developing new, tailored therapies that greatly enhance patient outcomes and disease management may result from a greater understanding of the microbiome's function in MS.
