Abstract: India's association with the USA is still vital to achieving its goals, but it is also unclear. The connection, while potentially beneficial, is not necessary for the United States yet potentially harmful for India due to the power imbalance between the two nations. The underpinnings of India's policy in Asia are also being undermined by the change in the political center of Asia brought on by the growing competition between China and the US, while India's glacial pace of reforms limits opportunities for increased economic connection. The future of India-US relations depends on their capacity to create a new quid pro quo in which the US would express its expectations in more realistic terms and India would shoulder a larger portion of the burden of Asia's security. Overall, India-USA trade has the potential to bring significant benefits to both countries, by driving economic growth, promoting innovation and competitiveness, and improving the well-being of consumers.
