Abstract: The research paper explores the insightful and transformative vision of education and liberation as presented in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Devil on the Cross and Wizard of the Crow. He emphasizes education is not just a means to acquire knowledge but also a powerful tool that shapes identities, preserves cultures, and empowers societies He critically examines how colonial education systems, designed to isolate the colonized from their heritage, suppressed indigenous languages and native traditions. By imposing European languages and values, colonial powers wanted to erase the cultural roots of African societies and instill a sense of inferiority among the colonized people. Thiong’o contrasts this alienating education with his vision of a system that is rooted in native culture and language, which he sees as essential for the true liberation of postcolonial societies. The research paper deals with Thiong’o’s vision to show how he encourages reclaiming cultural identity and empowering communities. He explains how language and education can be used both to control people and to help them resist oppression. Thiong’o strongly believes that African languages should be used in literature and education to free people’s minds from colonial influences and to bring back pride in their culture. By exploring how Thiong’o connects language, education, and liberation, the present research paper shows his belief that reconnecting with one’s heritage is necessary to overcome the lasting effects caused by colonialism.
Keywords: Colonialism, Decolonization, Education, Empowerment, Identity, Language, Liberation and Resistance.
