PAPER PRESENTS A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF TRADITIONAL METHODS FOR DETECTING FAULTS IN THREE- PHASE TRANSMISSION LINES. VARIOUS TYPES OF FAULTS, INCLUDING SINGLE LINE-TO-GROUND, LINE-TO-LINE, DOUBLE LINE-TO- GROUND, AND THREE-PHASE FAULTS, ARE DISCUSSED. CONVENTIONAL FAULT DETECTION TECHNIQUES, SUCH AS OVERCURRENT PROTECTION, DISTANCE PROTECTION, PILOT PROTECTION, AND DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION, ARE EXAMINED. THE APPLICATION OF MATHEMATICAL ALGORITHMS, SUCH AS SYMMETRICAL COMPONENTS AND FAULT IMPEDANCE CALCULATION, IN FAULT DETECTION AND CLASSIFICATION IS ALSO EXPLORED. ADDITIONALLY, THE ROLE OF TRADITIONAL MONITORING SYSTEMS, INCLUDING SCADA AND RELAY SYSTEMS, IN SUPPORTING FAULT DETECTION IS DISCUSSED. THE BENEFITS AND LIMITATIONS OF THESE TRADITIONAL METHODS ARE HIGHLIGHTED, EMPHASIZING THE NEED FOR ACCURATE AND SWIFT FAULT DETECTION TO ENSURE RELIABLE AND EFFICIENT TRANSMISSION LINE OPERATION.
