Abstract: In today’s digital age, where sharing and storing information has become an everyday necessity, the risk of accidentally exposing sensitive personal or confidential data has increased significantly. Whether it’s personal details like names, email addresses, phone numbers, or organizational information, mishandling such data can lead to privacy breaches, identity theft, or even legal problems. Keeping this in mind, we developed Redact – Privacy Guardian, a comprehensive web-based tool designed to help users easily identify and remove sensitive information from documents and images before sharing or storing them. This application is not just a simple file scanner; it combines modern frontend and backend technologies, cloud integration, and strong encryption techniques to ensure that privacy is maintained at every step. The core vision of Redact is to make privacy protection accessible and simple for everyone—from students submitting assignments to professionals handling confidential files. Our tool automatically detects sensitive data using a combination of pattern matching through regular expressions and natural language processing techniques, allowing it to find and redact information like names, dates, phone numbers, and organizations in various file formats such as PDFs, Word documents, text files, and images. Redact also ensures that once redacted, the files are encrypted on the client side before being securely uploaded to Google Cloud Storage, where access is tightly controlled with temporary, signed URLs. This way, users have full control over their data privacy. To build a secure, scalable, and user-friendly experience, we used cutting-edge technologies such as Next.js 14 and React 18 for the frontend, enhanced with TypeScript for code safety, along with Tailwind CSS and Radix UI for clean and responsive design. On the backend, Node.js powers secure API routes, with middleware like Multer managing file uploads and Sharp handling image processing. Our integration with Google Cloud Platform ensures reliable storage with strong authentication and encryption. We also implemented JWT-based authentication and role-based access control, ensuring that only authorized users can access certain features, and we carefully managed environment variables and cross-origin policies for added security. Redact’s architecture follows modern design principles like component-based UI, context providers for state management, and separation of concerns in the backend, making it maintainable and extensible for future improvements. The user interface focuses on simplicity and accessibility, offering drag-and-drop file uploads, real-time progress feedback, and clear notifications to guide users through the redaction process. With mobile-first responsive layouts, users can securely redact files anytime, anywhere, from any device. This tool has wide-ranging applications across education, healthcare, law, media, and business, allowing users to anonymize sensitive data quickly and confidently. By empowering individuals and organizations with an easy-to-use yet powerful privacy tool, Redact contributes to a safer digital ecosystem. Ultimately, this project demonstrates that privacy protection does not need to be complex or exclusive—it can be integrated into everyday workflows with thoughtful technology and a user-centered approach, helping protect what matters most in the digital world.
