Abstract: Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are a serious issue, with growing evidence highlighting the impact of early life experiences especially attachment styles and childhood trauma on their development. This dissertation examines how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and insecure attachment types affect the emergence of SUDs, emphasizing emotional dysregulation as a key factor. The research used quantitative methods and standard tools: the Experience in Close Relationships Scale–Revised (ECR-R), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). A sample of 200 adults, both men and women, with a history of substance abuse was selected from North Bengal, particularly Darjeeling and Siliguri. The findings reveal that people with anxious or avoidant attachment styles show higher levels of emotional dysregulation and are more inclined to use substances as a way to cope. A strong link was also identified between childhood trauma and challenges in regulating emotions, supporting the notion that unresolved trauma from childhood can lead to using substances for self-medication. These results underscore the importance of trauma-informed and attachment-focused strategies in treating and preventing SUDs.
