This paper delivers a comprehensive exploration of a transformative shift in Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM): the integration of graph-based technology. As organizations increasingly adopt complex, multi-cloud infrastructures, traditional CSPM tools—reliant on siloed and static rule-based analysis—struggle to address dynamic, interconnected risks. We introduce the concept of the Cloud Security Graph, a model that visualizes cloud assets, identities, and permissions as a graph of nodes and edges, aligning with an attacker's perspective. This graph-based approach enables contextual risk scoring and sophisticated attack path analysis, exposing "toxic combinations" of seemingly low-severity misconfigurations that together form critical vulnerabilities. The paper outlines the architectural design of modern graph-based CSPM systems, their convergence into Cloud Native Application Protection Platforms (CNAPPs), and surveys both commercial and open-source implementations. We also examine the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing predictive analytics, along with the graph query languages and database technologies that power these platforms. Our findings suggest that adopting the graph paradigm is essential for shifting from reactive alert management to proactive, strategic cloud risk reduction.
