Paper Title:
AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EPSOM SALT COMPRESS VERSUS PLAIN WATER COMPRESS ON JOINT PAIN AMONG ELDERLY PEOPLE OF SELECTED AREAS OF DISTRICT KANGRA, HIMACHAL PRADESH
Background: National prevalence shows that Joint pain affects over 1 in 6 adults in India, with higher rates in rural areas. The Tribune, suggests a 60% prevalence of joint pain in Kangra’s elderly population & 66.7% of females and 42.9% of males were affected. Compared to other alternative & complementary interventions, hot water application with Epsom salt is feasible, inexpensive and effective and shows a more clinical relevant improvement in knee joint pain and function in short and longer terms.
Methodology: A quantitative research approach and true-experimental specific parallel group design adopted to conduct this study. Non- probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the 60 elderly people with joint pain residing in selected areas of District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Numerical Pain Rating Scale was used to assess the joint pain intensity. Analysis of data collection was done according to objectives of the study and data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Result: The results showed that 56.67% of the participants were aged 65–70 years, 56.67% were male & 43.33% female in both groups. 66.67% were hindu in both the groups. 40.00% elderly people with primary education in the epsom salt & 46.67% in the plain water compress group. 60.00% married individuals in both groups. 50.00% reported moderate work history in both epsom salt & plain water compress group. Vegetarians were more common in both the groups. The duration of time since joint pain 6 months–1 year was the most common duration of joint pain. The epsom salt group had a lower mean post-test pain score of 0.93 compared to the plain water group mean that is 1.57.Study findings revealed that there was no significant association of post-test level of joint pain with their selected socio-demographic variables in both the epsom salt compress group & plain water compress group.
Conclusion: It was concluded that while both interventions were effective, the epsom salt compress was more effective compared to the plain water compress in reducing joint pain among the elderly people.
