Paper Title:
Self Compassion as a Tool to Reduce Perfectionism and Anxiety in the Indian Social Context: Insights from Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles
This study explores the impact of self-compassion on reducing perfectionism and anxiety in the Indian socio-cultural context, using principles of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Data were collected from 33 Indian college students and working professionals using standardized tools: the Self Compassion Scale (adapted), Irrational Beliefs Inventory, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and Beck Anxiety Inventory. Results indicated that irrational beliefs were strongly associated with perfectionism and moderately with anxiety, while maladaptive coping strategies correlated with higher anxiety. Perfectionism did not directly predict anxiety but mediated the relationship between irrational beliefs and emotional distress. Findings suggest that culturally sensitive interventions incorporating self-compassion into REBT and CBT can buffer against perfectionism and anxiety in Indian academic and workplace contexts.
