Abstract
Bharata’s Nāṭyaśāstra remains the foundational text of Indian dramaturgy. Its classification of female characters provides crucial insight into ancient Indian gender ideology. This paper examines the status of women in the Nāṭyaśāstra, focusing on the nāyikā taxonomy and supporting female roles. The analysis reveals a complex blend of empowerment through artistic centrality and restriction through patriarchal norms.
