Abstract: Child marriage in rural areas remains a persistent social issue shaped by interconnected economic, cultural, and structural factors. Poverty is one of the primary drivers, as families often view early marriage as a way to reduce financial burden or secure economic stability. Limited access to quality education, especially for girls, further increases vulnerability, as schooling is frequently discontinued due to distance, safety concerns, or lack of resources. Deep-rooted traditional norms and patriarchal attitudes also encourage early marriage, associating a girl’s honor and security with marriage at a young age. In some communities, social pressure and fear of stigma push families to arrange marriages early. Lack of awareness about legal provisions and the harmful consequences of child marriage contributes to its continuation. Gender inequality and restricted decision-making power of girls reinforce the cycle. Inadequate implementation of laws and weak monitoring mechanisms further enable the practice. Additionally, insecurity, migration, and natural disasters may accelerate early marriage as a coping strategy. Addressing child marriage in rural areas therefore requires comprehensive interventions focusing on education, economic empowerment, legal enforcement, and community awareness to ensure sustainable social change.
