Abstract: Online examinations are widely used today, but preventing cheating is still a major challenge. Most existing online exam systems use basic webcam monitoring such as face detection and simple rule-based checks. These methods often generate false cheating alerts and do not provide clear reasons for their decisions. In addition, many systems do not properly monitor browser misuse or protect student privacy. To overcome these limitations, this project proposes a “Smart Online Examination System with AI Proctoring”. The system continuously monitors student behavior instead of checking only single events. It calculates a cheating risk score based on repeated actions like looking away, face absence, and tab switching. The system uses multifactor monitoring by combining webcam analysis with real-time browser and screen activity tracking. Object detection is used to identify unauthorized items such as mobile phones. An Explainable AI approach is included to clearly show why a student is flagged as suspicious. Important exam events are stored securely using tamper-proof logging techniques. The system also follows a privacy-aware approach by processing sensitive data locally. Overall, the proposed system provides a more accurate, secure, and transparent online examination solution.
Keywords: AI proctoring, online examination system, cheating detection, computer vision, face and eye tracking, behavior analysis, browser and screen monitoring, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), real-time monitoring, multi-factor proctoring, privacy-aware security, and secure examination environment.
