| Abstract: | The informal sector has been the lifeline of the rural economy in Assam by providing livelihood to a large percentage of the workforce without any job security, stable incomes and social protection. Weekly markets, or haats, are considered to be the fulcrum of the informal economy that facilitated exchanges between producers, sellers, and consumers.This paper examines labor dynamics of the Dishangmukh Weekly Market in Sivasagar District, focussing on wage payments, income uncertainty and employers-provided job security among workers. The results show significant levels of wage differentiation among occupational groups with the service providers and the porters earning relatively high sums of money daily as compared to the farmers and sellers.There was a wide difference in levels of income especially to agricultural producers which leaves them more vulnerable. Job security was considered to be quite unstable as employees were relying on informal arrangements and facing challenges raised by environmental upheavals, competition, and regulation policies. The educational accomplishments revealed a positive relationship in level of income; however, most employees were having only primary or sub-primary education. The study implies that weekly markets, which include Dishangmukh, are instrumental to preserving the livelihoods of the rural population, but they are perpetually trapped in structural vulnerabilities limiting income security and social safety.Policy context recommendations to improve the resilience of the unorganised workers in rural Assam would entail skill development, welfare assistance programs, market infrastructure development, and official recognition of haats by local administration. |
