Abstract: Shesher Kobita by Rabindranath Tagore is one of the most sophisticated explorations of love in modern Indian literature. Unlike conventional romantic novels that focus on emotional union and marriage, Shesher Kobita presents love as an intellectual, emotional, and spiritual experience that transcends possession. Through the characters of Amit Ray and Labanya, Tagore examines the relationship between individuality and intimacy, desire and freedom, permanence and separation. The novel challenges traditional social ideas about love and marriage by suggesting that true love does not always require physical union or domestic fulfilment. Instead, Tagore presents love as a deeply personal experience that grows through understanding, respect, memory, and emotional freedom. This paper explores the philosophy of love in Shesher Kobita by analyzing Tagore’s treatment of ideal love, emotional independence, selfhood, and separation. It argues that Tagore redefines love not as ownership, but as a form of mutual spiritual recognition that preserves the individuality of both lovers.
