Abstract: Electric vehicles (EV) rely on high-capacity lithium-ion battery packs requiring careful monitoring and management to ensure safety, longevity, and optimal performance. This paper presents the design and implementation of a microcontroller-based Battery Management System (BMS) for an EV battery pack, incorporating real-time State of Charge (SOC) estimation. The BMS monitors key battery parameters - voltage, current, and temperature - and provides protection against over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-temperature conditions. SOC is estimated using a hybrid coulomb- counting and voltage-based correction algorithm implemented on a PIC16F72 microcontroller. The prototype was tested under various load conditions, demonstrating accurate monitoring, reliable SOC estimation within ±5% error, and effective protective responses. Results validate the feasibility of implementing a cost-effective, embedded BMS suitable for small-scale EV battery demonstrations.
