Abstract: Hydropower resource is deemed as one of the prime and renewable sources of energy. Due to the availability, fidelity and aptness for peaking purposes, economy and pollution free quality, hydropower should be accorded precedence over other modes of power generation whenever potential for hydropower is available particularly in the Northeast India. The Jia Bharali river basin is rich in hydropower potential. This study presents aneasy method of assessing hydropower potential of the Jia Bharali river of the Jia Bharali river basin of the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh of India that has been selected as the study area. Sites on the Jia Bharali river in the study area were selected as case studies. The approach uses flow data of an analogue site to generate the data of the selected ungauged sites. The concerned study area was delineated using GIS technology. Relative positions of the hydropower potential sites and the respective net available heads were proposed using topographic map and contour map of the study area that was developed with the help of ASTER DEM in ArcGIS. Net head and design discharges were determined and the hydropower potentials for the two sites were estimated. This methodology could be functional during pre-viability study to assistgroundwork technical and socio-economic study before conducting detail research.
