Abstract: An earthquake is a natural phenomenon which is occurred by sudden release of energy within the crust and transmit seismic waves. Earthquake can occur anytime anywhere by shaking of ground which can cause loss of economy, human life and structural damage. Water has many applications such as to store drinking water, irrigation purpose, firefighting system, industrial use, rainwater collection etc. Type of soil is crucial standard to be decided by structural engineer. Also, the response of water tank which is based on location has greatly influenced by soil conditions. Poorly designed water tank was greatly damaged and collapsed by earthquake. This happened due to improper geometrical selection and lack of knowledge about dynamic effects. The principal of this study is to recognize the performance of water tank based on location with hard, medium and soft soil subjected to seismic loading and comparison of their outputs results. Total 9 cases were analyzed with ETABS software using Response Spectrum Method which represents greatest response of damped SDOF system to a specific input motion at distinct natural periods. From the analysis Base Shear, Base Moment and Story Drift are obtained and compared with respect to soils.
Keywords: Earthquake, ETABS, Response Spectrum Method, Base shear
