Abstract: In the life cycle of structural concrete, energy is consumed during the use of transportation and electricity, and raw material production, which causes release of carbon dioxide (CO¬2) due to the burning of fossil fuels like diesel and coal. This paper undertakes life cycle assessment (LCA) of concrete, which involves evaluating the environmental impact of the concrete system throughout its lifespan. A cradle-to-gate analysis is the utilized approach in LCA, which considers the environmental impact of the concrete system from raw material extraction to concrete production. The data is collected on the materials utilized in the concrete system, which is then analyzed using LCA software, such as openLCA, and ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards is utilized for embodied energy and carbon footprint analysis. The environmental impact of cement production is significant with 81.39% to 85.46% of total energy consumption and 93.08% to 94.80% of total carbon emission, and concrete mix ratios significantly impact the overall environmental impact of the concrete system where, there is gradual increase in the total energy and carbon footprint by 10% with the increase in grade of concrete. The results of the analysis can be utilized to assess the environmental impact associated with different concrete systems and identify potential alternatives for enhancing the sustainability of concrete.
