The highly toxic chromium (VI) compounds are converted into eco-friendly non-toxic chromium (III) compounds by using several oxidants. One such compound is piperidinium chlorochromate, used as an oxidant to oxidize n-butanaldehyde in 60% aqueous acetic acid medium in presence of H+ ions. The rection proceeds through the reversible complexation between the keto n-butanldehyde and protonated reacting species of oxidant, which disproportionates via a cyclic transition state in a rate-determining step, to yield the product n-butyric acid. The reaction was of first-order with respect to Pipcc. And fractional-order to hydrogen ion. However, Michaelis-Menten type kinetics was observed in n-butanaldehyde. A carbo cationic species thorough hydride-ion transfer from n-butanaldehyde to oxidant (Pipcc.) was suggested in mechanism.
