“Effect of maternal anemia on birth weight of new born”
Background: During pregnancy anemia is common due to increased demand of iron for the growing fetus and placenta and increased red blood cell mass, which is further aggravated with other factors such as childbearing at an early age, repeated pregnancies, short intervals between pregnancies and poor access to antenatal care and supplementation. Low birth weight is a major public health problem in India and influenced by several factors including maternal anemia maternal hemoglobin values during pregnancy are associated with low birth weight. Objectives: To assess effect of maternal anemia on birth weight of new born. Methodology: A Quantitative research approach and Correlational Prospective design was used. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 200 II trimester anemic mothers in BMC Hospital Aliganj, Lucknow. Data were analyzed by using descriptive & inferential statistics. Results: The effect of maternal anemia on birth weight of new born is that 72 mothers are having mild anemia, out of 72 , 21(29.2%) newborns were normal birth weight, 48(66.7%) newborns were low birth weight, 3 (4.2%) were very low birth weight. Further 99 mothers had moderate anemia, out of 99, 16 (16.2%) newborns had normal birth weight, 79 (79.8%) newborns had low birth weight, 4(4.0%) had very low birth weight and 29 mothers are having severe anemia, out of 29, 17 (58.6%) newborns had low birth weight, 11 (37.9%) had very low birth weight. The Chi –square value is 41.41 and P value is <0.001, and it is less than 0.05 (level of significant). Hence there is relationship between maternal anaemia and birth weight of new born. Conclusion: Maternal anemia being an important risk factor for low birth weight. Anemia should be detected and treated as early possible to avoid the complication.
