Abstract: Mana is a Dravya (substance), although beyond sensory perception but it is called as Dravya since it has got both Guna (quality) and Karma (action) coexistent within itself. It is connected to both Gyanendriyas (sensory centre) and Karmendriyas (motor centre) and therefore called Ubhayendriya (combined senso-motor entity). In Charaka Samhita the term ‘Satva’ and ‘Chetas’ are synonymously used for Manas, There are some other synonyms mentioned as ‘Citta’, ‘Hrdaya’, ‘Satva’ and ‘Manas. Though the Atma and senses exist, if there is no attention on the part of mind there can be no knowledge thus Lakshana of Manas is ‘Jnanasyabhavo Bhava Eva Cha’ i.e., presence or absence of knowledge. In Ayurveda diagnosis and management of Manas Roga, is not given as a separate identity. But when we do the compilation from Brihatrayee and Laghutrayee, could get a limited mental disorders and their management. In our classics Roga and Rogi Pariksha is explained in detail, but regarding mental status examinations is still needs attention. An honest and grateful work is done by M.G. Ramu and others in the context of mental status examination in Ayurveda. There, Pratyatma Lingam of Unmada are mentioned as like Mano, Buddhi, Sangya Gyana, Smriti, Bhakti, Sheela, Cheshta, Achara. But for better understanding it is good to start mental status examination with Sheela, Cheshta, Achara, Manas, Buddhi, Smriti, Sangya Gyana and Bhakti.
Keywords: Mana, Dravya, Gyanendriyas, Karmendriyas, Ubhayendriya, Atma, Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Roga Pariksha, Rogi Pariksha etc.
