Abstract: Empowerment programmes for women have been found to be successful in improving her status in family and society, while giving a feeling of self – worth and esteem. Since the 1950’s The India Government and Non-Governmental Organizations have initiated several programs to alleviated poverty including subsidizing food and other necessities increased access to loan improving human empowerment promoting education and family planning. These measures have helped eliminate famines, cut absolute poverty levels by more than half and reduced illiteracy and malnutrition The Tamilnadu Government take several steps to eradication poverty and increased their income and standard of living. Therefore several schemes are introduced by the Central and State Government. One of the milestones is Mahalir Thittam. Under this scheme the target group comprises of poor and vulnerable section of the community. The target people are organized into active Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities. In the present paper the analysis on the working of Mahalir Thittam in Cuddalore Block is made in general and particularly it aims to study the socio economic background of the beneficiaries; to explore the functioning of Mahalir Thittam in the study area; to examine the impact of Mahalir Thittam on the Life of the Beneficiaries; to identify the impediments in execution of the project and to suggest possible measures to strengthen the functioning of this Scheme. After assessing the ground realities by way of making a pilot survey, a disproportionate stratified simple random sampling has been employed and identified three villages from the block Cuddalore. From each village, thirty beneficiaries of Mahalir Thittam have been selected and the total 90 sample has been identified for the study. The primary data have been collected for the households of Cuddalore Secondary data have also been collected from Cuddalore Mahalir Thittam Office, (Office of Women and Child Welfare) / BDO Office regarding the project work. It is observed that Mahalir Thittam in the study area have positive impact, that is the income earned by the women after training is better than before the training. The savings and house hold assets also have good impact after the implementation of Mahalir Thittam. The women are very much satisfied with the training program. This is a one of the successful scheme introduced by the Tamilnadu government and it will be a tool for empowering the women folk in the study region.
