Irular tribes are ethnic tribes who are scattered all over the Tamil Nadu. In Dharmapuri district various tribes Like Irular, Kurmbur, Malayali, Nari Kuravar are some important tribes. Pennagaram taluk of Dharmapuri is a hill lock area, with thorny scrub jungle, deciduous, dry evergreen and semi evergreen forest. Irular communities who lived in Mellagiri hills of Eastern Ghats, in Gutherayan reserve forest are resettled in Podur hamlet of Pennagaram. Even today they prefer to gather their needs from forest, rather than from agriculture. They visit the forest every fortnight and collect tubers, wild fruits, and honey from the forest for their own needs. Most of the tribes depend on indigenous medicine for their needs. In the present study, 100 plants were documented for enthobotany. Of the plants documented most are of medicinal value, followed by edible plants, medicine for live stocks and plants for rituals. The ethnic knowledge is still intact in some of the tribes. In the present study: herbs were more utilized (53%) followed by trees (30%) and shrubs. Most of the medicine was for bites, open cut wounds, closed blood clots followed by stomach ache and tooth ache. Plants were also used for deworming their livestocks and for wound healing. Plants were consumed directly, and or were dried, powdered and added as additives along with other cereals. Most of these plants were highly nutritious and improve the general body health. Some plants were also used based on their religious belief like warding off the evil spirits etc.
