Abstract: Abstract This study investigates the interplay between liquidity risk and efficiency in shaping the performance of India’s 12 Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks over 2014–2023, leveraging the PSU Bank Nifty as a market-based lens. PSU banks, controlling over 60% of India’s banking assets by March 2025, face dual challenges of profitability and socio-economic mandates, making liquidity risk and operational efficiency critical areas of focus amid mergers, recapitalization, and digital transformation. Using descriptive, box plot, and regression analyses via EViews on 120 observations, the study addresses three objectives: (1) assessing liquidity risk’s influence on performance, (2) analysing its impact on operational efficiency, and (3) predicting performance vulnerabilities. Findings reveal that higher liquidity buffers (X1, X2) enhance Minimum Liquidity Assets (MLA) and profitability (e.g., SBI’s NIM rising from 2.5% to 3.1%), while aggressive lending (X6, X7) and volatile funding (X3) increased risk, straining efficiency (e.g., IOB’s NPA drop from 22.3% to 5.6%). The R-squared (0.541865) and predictive outliers (e.g., low MLA in banks 2, 7, 10) validate the model, offering actionable insights for proactive risk management. Bridging literature gaps, this research underscores balanced liquidity strategies for resilience, justifying its objectives with empirical evidence.
