Education is fundamental right of every human being irrespective of gender. In India, Female education is not a result of modern civilization. Even in the early Vedic era women had the right to study Veda and fine arts and to participate in religious ceremonies with her spouse In Epic age, there was no discrimination of sex in the field of study. Even to generate a learned daughter in Brihadaranyak Upanishad a particular mantra was advised. Most of the female characters are found well educated in the age of Ramayana and Mahabharta. But over time, changes in the position of women can be observed. Sometimes it had been put an end to. From the eleventh century till middle of the eighteen century when the British rule was established in the country, the ‘Purdah’ system was followed and education of women came to be stopped. In 1854 the East India Company supported women’s education and employment. Then the education was limited only to primary school level. In 1958, government of India formed a national committee for the education of women and in favour of women education the most of the recommendations of the committee was accepted by the government. As a result, an improvement in the number of female students’ enrolment in higher education is visible since independence. Higher education broadens our horizons. Taxila, Nalanda and Vikramshila is characterized as India’s early universities. Nowadays, there are many higher educational institutions in India and higher education is not only limited to men, but has also spread to women, In fact, higher education for women is not only for betterment of their family and children, but it also plays a leading role in the development of society and nation.
