Palynology, the study of pollen, spores, and dinoflagellates, plays a crucial role in hydrocarbon exploration by providing high-resolution biostratigraphy, assessing thermal maturity, and reconstructing paleoenvironmental conditions. This paper discusses the significance of palynomorphs in dating and correlating rock layers, evaluating source rock potential, and predicting depositional environments. Case studies from the Niger Delta, North Sea, and Middle East demonstrate practical applications of palynology in petroleum exploration. Advances in analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence microscopy, and artificial intelligence (AI), are also explored for their impact on improving exploration efficiency. Future trends, including AI-driven automation and integration with geochemical methods, are also discussed.
