Abstract
This paper examines the intersection of natural justice and police powers within the Indian constitutional framework, highlighting their collective role in upholding the rule of law. While the police are constitutionally empowered to maintain public order and enforce laws, their actions often risk infringing upon fundamental rights, particularly when exercised without procedural safeguards. Natural justice, with its core tenets of fairness, impartiality, and the right to be heard, serves as a critical check on such powers. Through an analysis of landmark judicial decisions—including Maneka Gandhi, Joginder Kumar, Nambi Narayanan, and In Re: Demolition of Structures—this study explores how Indian courts have interpreted and enforced natural justice principles to curb arbitrary state action. The paper further delves into contemporary challenges such as systemic bias, custodial violence, political misuse of police, and the lack of institutional accountability. It concludes by emphasizing the need for structural reforms, independent oversight mechanisms, and ethical policing practices to ensure that state authority is exercised within the bounds of justice, legality, and constitutional morality.
