Abstract: Abstract: In recent years, the number of people suffering from mental problems (such as anxiety and depression) has increased dramatically. As a result, it is critical to pursue prevention and treatment techniques for mental diseases. Several intestinal microbiotas, particularly Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, have been shown to influence mental health via the microbiota-gut-brain axis, and gut microbiota dysbiosis can be associated with mental diseases such as anxiety, depression, and others. Dietary components, such as probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium), prebiotics (e.g., dietary fibre and alpha-lactalbumin), synbiotics, postbiotics (e.g., short-chain fatty acids), dairy products, spices (e.g., Zanthoxylum bungeanum, curcumin, and capsaicin), fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and so on, may protect against mental disorders by enhancing beneficial gut microbiota while suppressing harmful ones. This article provides an overview of the gut microbiota linked to mental disorders. Furthermore, the protective effects of dietary components on mental health via targeting the gut flora are explored. In order to prevent and treat mental problems, these studies may help turn some dietary natural components into medicines and functional foods.
Keywords: Keywords: Gut microbiota, gut-brain axis, mental health, probiotics, prebiotics, short-chain fatty acids, depression, anxiety, dietary interventions, fermented foods, dysbiosis, neurotransmitters, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes.
